According to a 2022 GAO report, the DoD currently spends $90B annually to maintain its weapon systems. At the same time, the same report also found that only four of 49 DoD aircraft met their annual mission-capable goal in the majority of the fiscal years 2011-2021. DoD MROs suffer from root technology challenges to readiness - a problem that can increase costs and lower readiness over time. While readiness has traditionally fallen on maintenance teams to keep their vehicles and weapon systems mission-capable at maximum uptime, these technical challenges keep mission-capable rates low.
