Software Sustainment: Overtaking Hardware in Terms of Complexity and Cost

  • Wednesday, 04/10/2019: 10:30 AM - 11:15 AM
  • Session Number:  213

      Description:

Software is defining the capabilities of weapons systems and is growing exponentially. For example, 90% of the avionics requirements for the F-35 rely on software. New lines of code to existing hardware create advances and new capabilities. Software upgrades and maintenance are now required at the depot as a “core capability” by statute. However almost nothing in government is oriented to software sustainment. In order to achieve this capability aircraft depot’s need access to OEMs IP. Contractors want to keep control of their IP and do the maintenance. It becomes a skills and cost issue for the government. This session will look at the the services needs and progress at the depot level and hear from the industry on  their perspective.
